Summary
Arthur sits with his mother, Erin Oakes, in the prison family room, noting the nearby Nighswanders. Erin greets him warmly, and they trade updates: Arthur’s UK summer with his grandparents, his Oxford ambitions tied to Erin’s February parole hearing, and Erin’s new prison book club, which chose Jackie Collins over her feminist pick.
Arthur mentions a local paper’s profile quoting him about Rackham College’s rare books, including the Enoch Crane journal, but realizes he left the clipping in the car. The Nighswanders approach. Jayne presses Erin about her conviction and moral responsibility. Erin explains the fatal accident during nonviolent trespass and accepts responsibility for unintended consequences. Jayne uses Erin’s stance to lecture Tana.
Tana, upset, tries to leave. As she passes, her mother kicks her knee, then throws coffee and threatens her over burned belongings. Arthur reflexively steps between them to help Tana up; when Tana shoves him away, his outstretched hand strikes the elder Nighswander’s face, likely breaking her nose. Guards restrain the elder Nighswander and clear the room, ending visitation. Erin complies, signaling affection to Arthur as she leaves.
