Summary
Bruised and shaken, the friends gather in Arthur’s dark bedroom to tend injuries. Gwen organizes ice, painkillers, and comfort, while Van lies on the floor with frozen corn on his groin and others drink cheap beer. Arthur, nursing a bloodied nose, finally unloads the full story about the Nighswanders, his imprisoned mother, and the escalating theft of rare books.
Emotions spike: Donna rages and fantasizes violent revenge, while Allie explains her earlier submission was to protect Donna. Calling the police is rejected. The group turns to practical options as Arthur confirms his mother may receive parole within a year.
Colin proposes paying the Nighswanders: $4,000 immediately and $600 monthly from his allowance; Allie adds she can contribute $1,000 a month on a credit card. Van jokes he can’t help financially.
