Summary
Van, unable to sleep, sits in a straight-backed chair by his picture window, watching the hospital corridor set to a dim nighttime mode. He notes islands of bright light amid long stretches of darkness, like a redacted document, and feels detached from himself, as if he is an astral projection.
A procession appears in flickers of light: men in polo shirts push gurneys past without acknowledging Van. Under the sheets lie corpses—one after another—the maintenance crew. One body is poorly covered, revealing a cold, swollen foot with cheerfully painted toenails and strands of dripping blond hair. A small crab clinging to the hair tumbles to the floor.
After the gurneys pass, Van watches the nearly translucent crab remain still, then skitter sideways into the shadows.
