Summary
A fire breaks out at Beirut’s Warehouse 12 and burns for less than twenty minutes before a devastating explosion. The blast pulverizes the harbor, topples cranes, and flings heavy machinery, its shockwave felt and heard far beyond the city.
Among the few survivors, an eight-year-old girl, Adeline Hamoud, is rescued from the rubble half a mile away. In the seconds before the blast, Adeline hears a rattling, cobra-like hiss, impossibly large and loud, which she believes precedes the catastrophe that kills her parents and sister.
Other survivors along the harbor report similar animal roars and shrieks just before detonation. Despite these consistent accounts, doctors diagnose the witnesses with PTSD and dismiss the serpent-like noises as trauma-induced perceptions.
