Summary
On a September weekend, Arthur Oakes drives west across New England to the Black Cricket Women’s House of Correction to visit his mother, Dr. Erin Oakes. The facility’s high school–like facade and grim lobby underscore the institutional setting and Arthur’s discomfort, amplified by his inherited, bumper-stickered VW.
In the visitor line, Arthur stands behind Jayne Nighswander, her boyfriend Ronnie Volpe, and Jayne’s younger sister, Tana, a pizza delivery girl Arthur recognizes from campus deliveries.
