Van McBride wakes with a blinding migraine in what looks like a cheap motel room, only to find his hands locked in black leather mittens secured by padlocks. Disoriented, half-dressed, and craving drugs, he tries to piece together recent events, vaguely recalling an explosion and Allie’s warning.

Seeking help, Van drinks water, then calls the room phone. A woman from “guest services” calmly addresses him by name, says breakfast and pills are coming, and that Mr. Valentine will explain everything. She implies the restraints are a safety measure and ends the call, offering no release.

Trying the door and peeking through the curtains, Van discovers there is no parking lot—just a brightly lit white corridor with passing staff, confirming he’s inside a controlled, clinical facility masquerading as a motel room. The door handle is useless, and onlookers show little interest, deepening his panic.

Van accidentally pulls down the curtain rod in frustration, wraps himself in the bedspread, and turns on the TV for clues. Instead of news, he finds multiple surveillance channels of Donna McBride in an identical room, also bound in mittens and unconscious, revealing they are both prisoners under constant monitoring.

As fragments return—the Brooklyn blast, Allie’s frantic call—Van realizes he and Donna were taken and are now held by Mr. Valentine’s operation. The discovery shifts him from confusion to grim awareness: escape is barred, they are being drugged and observed, and Donna is close but unreachable.
