Robin drives the team off the narrow road near Slaughterbridge into a rain-soaked meadow. Colin notes Robin’s competence with mixed feelings, contrasting her capability with his preference for people who accept limits. They gear up: Arthur shoulders his old frame pack and distributes powerful flashlights, instructing Robin and Colin to use maximum brightness if threatened.

As they walk toward the bridge over the River Camel, Robin questions Arthur about their guide, Stuart Finger, and whether he will agree to a descent tonight. Arthur suggests Finger is mercurial and must be met on his terms. He remains evasive about their deeper purpose, emphasizing only the need for a trusted friend to know their plan.

Robin presses further, pointing out Arthur’s instructions place her away from the cave and nearer any risk posed by the guide. She comes prepared to wait with a chair, boots, and tea. Arthur maintains that any risk is for him and Colin to face, not Robin.

Approaching the bridge, Robin asks if the mission connects to Van and the strange phenomenon they saw in Greenland. Arthur, studying the embankment, suddenly brightens, indicating their contact is present beneath the bridge. He warmly thanks Robin, insists she remain on watch, and sets a contingency: if they are not back by 1 a.m., she must get help.

Arthur frames his decision as a debt to Van and Allie to protect Robin, while Colin tries to lighten the mood with a joke about their incorrigibility. With the contact located and roles set, the team prepares to separate—Robin to guard the bridge and Arthur and Colin to approach the guide.
