Book Five: Save Yourself — 24.

Overview

Gwen wakes after the saint’s blood treatment, her fever broken but strength sapped. At her bedside, Robin tends and admits Donna visited and seems unharmed. Gwen’s weary reaction hints at ambivalence about survival. The scene confirms Gwen is alive and recovering, resetting stakes ahead of Easter.

Summary

Robin keeps vigil by Gwen’s hospital bed, passing time by crocheting a knight’s helmet she imagines for her “dragon-fighting” friends, starting with Gwen. Her focus breaks when she notices Gwen is awake, dry-mouthed and rasping for water, the taste of metal lingering after her illness.

Robin reports Gwen’s fever broke overnight and goes to alert the nurse. She also shares that Donna visited the day before and appears uninjured. Gwen, recalling Donna last marched her toward death, absorbs the news without anger, asking after Donna and accepting that she seems fine.

Robin tries to comfort Gwen, saying at least she’s alive; Gwen’s wry reply suggests weariness with her fate. Exhausted, Gwen slips back to sleep, leaving Robin to her watch and the unfinished helmet, a small sign of care as recovery begins.
