Overview
Joe Valentine tries to coerce Donna by broadcasting Van’s confinement and threatening him with a chemical agent. Donna hints that the entity’s true name confers power but refuses to reveal it. She tricks Joe into leaning close, bites off most of his ear, and revels in her small victory.
The power dynamic tilts as Donna proves unbreakable, escalating hostilities and undermining Joe’s control.
Summary
Donna, restrained in a hospital-like room, rebels against a nurse by spitting juice in her face and overturning the meal cart. Joe Valentine arrives, admonishes her, and switches on a TV feed showing Van sedated in a similar bed, using his vulnerability to pressure Donna’s compliance.
Joe threatens to inflict suffering on Van with a chemical once used on POWs, framing it as reciprocal rules after recent lethal events. Cornered, Donna asks what Joe wants; he demands the name of the creature that killed his men and bystanders.
Donna claims there are rules: names have power, and knowing the name allows command. She asks Joe to dismiss the nurse and the mustached guard, then suggests whispering the name. When Joe leans close, Donna bites down on his ear, tearing most of it off and spitting it back at him.
As the nurse and guard rush Joe out, Donna recovers from the blow she received and dissolves into laughter. The scene ends with Joe maimed and Donna unbowed, having turned coercion into a moment of defiance.
