They settle in a cedar-beamed den to watch America’s Most Wanted, turning the moment casual despite the dangerous prize in their midst.

During the first commercial, Colin returns with sapphire-tinged weed. He shares joints among Van, Allie, Donna, and Arthur, then opens the Crane journal. As Colin reads by TV light, everyone’s recall begins to splinter. The smoke thickens like a ritual haze, and the atmosphere grows serpentine and unreal, blurring the boundary between observation and invocation.

Colin relays entries about a boy who branded himself to silence a devil’s voice, which Allie labels adolescent schizophrenia. He then describes the Cobbett sisters—one willing, one forced—branded as children under supposed demonic command. The book lists devils and requires fealty to King Sorrow. Banter masks rising dread as Arthur, now a self-acknowledged felon, joins the smoking circle, and the group slips further toward the forces named in the journal.
