Overview
After a street explosion, Donovan “Van” McBride panics for Allie but learns she is alive and under attack by men tied to their Greenland past. Allie urges Van to flee and warn the others. Before he can escape, intruders drug and seize Van, signaling a coordinated hunt against the group.
Summary
Donovan “Van” McBride watches a fireball erupt from Garfield Place and fears Allie has been killed on her errand to the corner store. Shocked and disoriented, he scrambles for shoes amid the shattered glass and chaos of their apartment, convinced he must reach the blast site.
Allie calls first, alive but breathless. She warns that men—posing as repairmen and working with the heavyset man from Greenland—are after them. She says one attacker tried to inject her, forcing her to bring King Sorrow through briefly to escape. Allie orders Van to leave immediately and rendezvous at Washington Square, then hangs up to alert Donna.
Van hesitates, resentful that Donna must be involved, and keeps searching for shoes. Before he can act, three intruders are already in the apartment: a cherubic blond with a syringe, a slick-haired accomplice who grabs Van, and a mustached heavy holding Van’s missing shoe. The syringe plunges into Van’s neck, his legs give way, and the men march him forward.
Overwhelmed by the drug, Van collapses into darkness, captured before he can flee, confirming that a planned, professional operation is underway against him and Allie.
