3. Eden
Overview
Locked out and desperate before her exhibition, Eden watches a police officer arrive. Harrison lies, claiming an unstable stranger threatened his wife and giving a description that matches Eden. The officer accepts the story, heightening Eden’s isolation. Nearly discovered, Eden runs, escalating the mystery of her erasure and Harrison’s betrayal.
Summary
Frozen outside her own house before her first exhibition, Eden tries every entrance and confirms the lights are on but no one will let her in. With her phone and keys locked inside, she debates going to the small local station, convinced Harrison wouldn’t willingly do this and fearing the impostor is dangerous.
A police car arrives, and Eden hides to observe. Harrison tells the officer that a confused, unstable woman threatened his wife and claims he has never seen the woman before. He asserts that he and his wife—using Eden’s name for the impostor—only recently moved in and felt safe until now.
When the officer asks to speak with “his wife,” Harrison says she has a migraine and mentions Eden’s planned exhibition to bolster his story. He provides a description of the supposed intruder that matches Eden: petite, thirty-something, long blond hair, dressed in black, and suggests the woman mimicked his wife’s voice.
Sergeant Carter reassures Harrison about Hope Falls’ safety, advises locking up, and mentions a new senior detective starting the next day. Harrison asks to speak with that detective, signaling his desire to control the narrative.
Panicking and short of breath, Eden accidentally makes a noise that draws attention. As the officer’s flashlight sweeps the garden, she chooses flight over confrontation and runs, realizing she is being deliberately erased from her own life and unsure why Harrison is complicit.
