70. Birdy

One year after her overdose, Birdy reflects that Carter found her, called an ambulance, and performed CPR until paramedics revived her after seven minutes of clinical death. Hospital tests followed; unexpectedly, her tumors regressed and she entered remission, defying Thanatos’s predicted death date.

Birdy and Sunday now live at Spyglass. She learned—after the fact—that Harrison was CEO of Thanatos and had allowed her to believe she would die. Harrison later admitted the algorithm was unreliable, and he sold the company for a large sum.

Birdy describes her new routine and gratitude for life, running through Hope Falls and savoring small joys. She notes the community’s resets: Carter earned a promotion, his parents returned to The Smuggler’s Inn, Harrison moved to Switzerland with Mary, and Gabriella is now cared for by people who love her.

Returning from her run, Birdy briefly struggles with the front door and experiences déjà vu of Eden’s lock swap. The door opens from inside to reveal Gabriella wearing Birdy’s clothes, playfully asserting the house as hers. Birdy clarifies that Gabriella lives with her father in Switzerland but visits monthly; the two share an affectionate reunion.

Birdy reassures Gabriella she will never leave again. She resolves to embrace her second chance, trusting Harrison will provide financially for them, and concludes that Harrison never truly loved Eden—only Birdy was the wife he loved, while Eden was merely her husband’s wife.
