Overview

In the tunnels, DCI Bird confesses she was once married to Harrison and is Gabriella’s mother, revealing Eden began as their nanny and later became Harrison’s wife. Bird blames Eden for destroying her family but denies killing her. This reorients loyalties, motives, and the investigation’s core assumptions.

Summary

Locked in the cold tunnel, Sgt Carter pleads with DCI Bird to release him and asks why she struck him. Through the door, DCI Bird speaks emotionally about love, marriage, and parental guilt, framing her confession with the idea that the worst suffering is causing harm to one’s child.

DCI Bird then reveals she was once married to Harrison and that Gabriella is their daughter. She describes an accident when Gabriella was eight that shattered the family; Bird blamed herself, and Harrison blamed her as well. Believing they would be better off without her, Bird withdrew.

Bird explains she hired Eden as a young nanny during that period. After Gabriella came home from hospital, Harrison invited Eden to move in; later, after Bird and Harrison divorced, Harrison married Eden, who became Gabriella’s stepmother. For years Bird saw Eden as a savior, until learning six months ago that Eden had lied and “stole” her family.

When Carter asks directly if Bird killed Eden, DCI Bird says Eden deserved to die but denies killing her. Carter is left reeling, recognizing that Bird’s hidden ties to Harrison and Gabriella upend his understanding of everyone’s motives and the case.
