60. Carter
Overview
Carter learns from HQ that DCI Bird never took the Hope Falls job, exposing her deception. Returning to Spyglass, Carter finds Bird and Harrison gone, then discovers a concealed passage behind the library bookcases. Before he can investigate, an unseen assailant knocks him unconscious, escalating the danger and deepening the conspiracy.
Summary
Carter rushes back into Spyglass after a text from HQ states DCI Bird never got—or even applied for—the Hope Falls detective job. He replays recent events, recognizing irregularities in Bird’s sudden arrival and his unquestioning acceptance of her authority.
Searching the house, Carter finds no trace of Bird or Harrison Woolf. A noise from the back leads him to the library, where a fallen copy of Frankenstein draws his attention to the bookcases Bird had previously highlighted.
Investigating, Carter discovers a gap between the floor-to-ceiling shelves. He slides them apart, revealing a hidden door and what appears to be a tunnel, linking the room to an old “covenant” Bird had mentioned.
As Carter steps inside to pursue Bird and Harrison, he is struck on the head by an unseen attacker. Disoriented, he collapses and loses consciousness, leaving the fate of Bird, Harrison, and the secret passage’s purpose unresolved.
