56. Harrison
Overview
Harrison, handcuffed in Spyglass, sizes up Sgt Carter and the ailing DCI Bird as the investigation tightens. Bird refuses to release him and tries to connect the last clues. A deliberately placed photo of Gabriella triggers Bird’s recognition, exposing a significant link Harrison intended to leverage.
Summary
Harrison, handcuffed in Spyglass’s hall, notes Sgt Carter standing sentry on the bloody doorstep, keeping the door ajar and watching him. Harrison reassesses Carter as sharper than he appeared and dismisses DCI Bird as less perceptive.
Harrison demands the cuffs be removed; DCI Bird calmly refuses. She grimaces with pain, reminding Harrison of her terminal diagnosis from Thanatos. While she paces, visibly intent on fitting the remaining pieces of the case together, Harrison coolly appraises her resolve and appearance.
Harrison’s attention shifts to a newly hung photograph that replaces one of Eden: an image of his daughter, Gabriella, taken at eight, before her accident. DCI Bird stops at the frame, staring as if she’s seen a ghost, clearly recognizing the child.
This reaction is exactly what Harrison anticipated when he placed the photo. The recognition confirms a hidden connection involving Gabriella, giving Harrison potential leverage while Bird closes in, and leaving Carter guarding the threshold as tensions sharpen inside Spyglass.
