Summary
Six months earlier, Olivia “Birdy” Bird arrives at Spyglass and walks through each room, absorbing that she now owns the historically protected house. She notes covenants about the library’s original bookcases and a curious ban on merriment, while wondering if returning to Hope Falls is another mistake.
In the blue sitting room, Birdy experiences flashes of memory. She finds a single Christmas stocking with a jewelry box containing a large ruby ring that fits her wedding finger. The room’s old TV, blue rug, and a photo of young Birdy on her grandmother’s lap stir hazy recollections she cannot fully place.
On the mantel, Birdy discovers decades of envelopes addressed to her in elegant calligraphy, each a Christmas card from her grandmother with a swallow’s feather tucked inside. The discovery reframes her past, suggesting her grandmother loved her but could not find her. A vintage globe sparks a memory of the older woman teaching that life brings people back to where they started.
Birdy notices a well-worn patchwork armchair matching the photo and a small picture of herself as a girl in a dark tunnel. A sudden knock startles her; she drops and breaks the frame. Reluctant to engage, she opens the door to a young man who says he is the local police and came because Spyglass’s lights were on.
Wary, Birdy asserts herself and gives her name. The policeman, after scrutinizing her, responds with a shocking claim: “Olivia Bird is dead.” The revelation destabilizes Birdy’s sense of identity just as she was reconnecting with her past and inheritance.
