11. Eden
Overview
Eden breaks into Spyglass to recover proof of her identity but discovers her belongings and photos have been removed or replaced with the impostor. She finds spare car keys and resolves to visit Gabriella to prove who she is. Before she can leave, Eden falls down the stairs—possibly pushed—and blacks out as a figure approaches. The chapter escalates the identity-erasure plot and places Eden in immediate physical danger.
Summary
Soaked and panicked after throwing a police sergeant’s car keys into the sea, Eden runs back to Spyglass to retrieve proof of her identity. Finding the house seemingly empty, she smashes a back door, enters, and searches for her phone, purse, passport, and other ID, all of which are missing.
Eden recalls the couple’s strained intimacy since moving in, then scours the downstairs rooms, noticing that photos of her have been removed while pictures of Gabriella remain. Family and wedding photos featuring Eden are gone. She heads upstairs, changes clothes, and continues searching, shaken by her exhausted reflection and a disturbing birthday card from Harrison.
Unable to find her passport or laptop, Eden hears possible footsteps outside and inside but sees no one. She discovers a wedding photo in a familiar frame that has been altered to show Harrison with the impostor instead of Eden, confirming a deliberate effort to erase her identity.
She locates a spare set of car keys and decides to visit Gabriella, believing her daughter can help prove who she is. As Eden moves toward the stairs, a creaking floorboard precedes a sudden fall; she tumbles down the staircase, strikes her head, and lies in blinding pain.
A shadowy figure approaches as Eden loses consciousness, leaving her fate uncertain and suggesting an intruder may have been inside the house.
