13. Eden

Overview

Eden regains consciousness at the foot of her stairs, injured and disoriented, as Sergeant Carter confronts her and accuses her of breaking and entering. Despite insisting the house is hers, Carter dismisses her claims. When he fetches towels for her head wound, Eden seizes the moment to escape. She drives off with a small bag, cash, a spare car key, and a map, setting up her next move.

Summary

Eden awakens on the cold floor at the base of her staircase, in pain and confused about how she got there. Fractured memories return: her run, another woman in her home, Harrison denying she is Eden, social media with her name and another face, and a police officer threatening arrest. She also recalls falling down the stairs but is unsure if she was pushed.

Sergeant Carter appears, asking if she knows him and demanding her “real” name. Eden identifies herself as Eden Fox. Carter insists she tripped, claims he had just arrived after seeing the back door smashed, and adds breaking and entering to her alleged offenses. Eden shows her key chain with her name, but Carter dismisses it and references prior misconduct, including his car keys thrown in the harbor.

When Eden touches the back of her head and finds blood, Carter’s tone softens and he looks for something to stem the bleeding. Eden directs him to clean towels in the upstairs cupboard, a detail that supports her claim of ownership, but she does not argue it.

As soon as Carter runs upstairs, Eden bolts out the back, down the driveway, and into her car. With only a bag of clothes, a Blackmoor National Park map, and the spare Range Rover key and cash she previously found, Eden speeds away, determined to regain control and evade arrest.
