40. Harrison

Overview

Harrison follows a tracker to Eden’s body on the beach, retrieves her phone, and risks exposure after Sergeant Carter spots him. He escapes through Spyglass’s secret tunnel, destroys evidence, and vows to lie low. An ominous "LIAR" appears on his steamed mirror, heightening paranoia and signaling mounting pressure.

Summary

Harrison, convinced Eden is dead and blaming one person, crawls through Spyglass’s centuries-old tunnel to return home unseen. He knows Sergeant Carter glimpsed him across the bay and prepares an alibi: he was looking for his missing wife.

Earlier, a tracker hidden in Eden’s phone led Harrison to a body on the beach. The woman’s face was destroyed and her clothes unfamiliar, but the phone—sealed in a plastic bag—confirmed the identity he feared. Worried the device could link back to him, Harrison retrieved it and left the corpse to the gulls.

Back at Spyglass, he secures the secret door behind the bookcases, burns his mud- and blood-stained clothes, and resolves to keep a low profile. He reflects on aging, self-deception, and the need to avoid further mistakes as police scrutiny tightens.

After a scalding shower meant to clear his head, Harrison sees a single word appear in the steamed mirror—"LIAR"—a jarring, unexplained accusation that leaves him rattled and underscores the peril of his situation.
