Overview
Birdy walks into the Hope Falls station to confront Carter and unexpectedly takes command of the investigation. Amid news of a missing woman and a new detective’s arrival, Birdy reveals she is DCI Olivia Bird, establishing a new power dynamic and inserting herself directly into the unfolding case.
Summary
Birdy arrives at the quiet Hope Falls police station and finds Sgt. Carter alone, surprised, and uneasy. Their awkward history—meeting at her grandmother’s funeral and spending the night together—hangs in the air as Birdy observes his guilt and fatigue.
Carter tries to brush Birdy off, citing an unusually busy day and a missing-woman investigation. He also mentions a new detective’s first day and attempts to leave to meet them.
Birdy stops him, leading him to believe she has a personal confession. After letting the realization dawn on him, she reveals her true identity: DCI Olivia Bird. She is the new detective—and Carter’s superior—immediately shifting authority and placing herself at the center of the case.
