50. Birdy
Overview
Birdy, doubting Carter and frustrated by village secrecy, is confronted by Harrison over Carter’s unauthorized interview of Gabriella. Birdy pushes back, questioning Harrison’s priorities and raising the unidentifiable body found on the beach. When Carter returns, Birdy removes him from the case and suspends him, escalating internal conflict.
Summary
Birdy reflects on a contentious interview with Maddy Carter that undermined Old Stu’s reliability and deepened her sense that Hope Falls is hiding secrets. Exhausted and medicated, she searches Carter’s desk and struggles with the computer, worrying he is lying and reeling from learning he is married after spending the night with him.
Harrison Woolf storms into the station, furious that Carter interviewed Gabriella despite assurances she would be left alone. Birdy attempts to calm him, but Harrison blames the police and demands Carter be fired. Birdy counters by pressing him about Thanatos and accusing him of deflecting from Eden’s disappearance.
Birdy highlights Harrison’s lack of urgency over Eden, revealing that a body found on the beach is too damaged to identify, implying he may already know the truth. The confrontation shocks Harrison and escalates tensions.
When Carter arrives, Birdy rebukes him for going AWOL and disobeying orders by visiting The Manor. She officially removes Sergeant Carter from the investigation and suspends him, increasing stakes within the team and sharpening focus on Harrison and the unresolved identity of the body.
