1. Eden
Overview
Eden Fox readies for a new start in Hope Falls and her first art exhibition, revealing strains in her marriage and isolation after her daughter moved out. Returning from a run, Eden’s key fails, and a doppelgänger in her dress answers the door, claiming to be Eden—upending her identity and security.
Summary
At dusk in Hope Falls, Eden Fox runs to calm pre-show nerves and escape lingering doubts about past choices, her strained marriage to Harrison, and the emptiness after their daughter moved out. She reflects on their move from London, her revived ambition as a painter, and hopes for a fresh start.
As she passes the gallery, Eden sees her name on the exhibition poster and wrestles with shyness and social anxiety. She contrasts her introversion with Harrison’s charm and notes his frequent absences in London and secret meetings with their daughter, deepening her unease.
Returning to their clifftop home, Spyglass, Eden anticipates celebrating with Harrison. But her key no longer fits the lock. Expecting a simple mistake, she knocks, recalling the sentimental key chain Harrison gave her when they bought the house.
Instead of Harrison, a stranger answers—startlingly similar in appearance and voice to Eden, and wearing Eden’s chosen black velvet dress. When challenged, the woman declares she is Eden Fox and that she lives there, leaving the real Eden shocked and displaced at her own front door.
