42. Carter
Overview
Carter slips out after sleeping with Birdy and, seeking initiative, defies orders to visit The Manor. He confirms Gabriella lives in luxury care, learning she sometimes whispers after years of selective mutism. As a carer arrives, Carter recognizes “Mary” as Eden Fox—alive—undermining the presumed suicide and shifting the investigation’s focus.
Summary
Before dawn, Carter leaves Birdy’s pub after sleeping with her, noting she talks in her sleep and carries numerous medications he recognizes as more serious than migraines. Determined to prove his worth, he decides to follow his instincts despite Birdy’s orders.
Carter drives to The Manor, a secluded facility bordering Blackmoor National Park, to verify Gabriella Woolf’s status. Greeted by Ingrid, he is led to Room Thirteen, where Gabriella lives in what resembles a lavish suite rather than a prison.
Inside, Carter finds Gabriella painting a skilled watercolor of Spyglass, the word “home” hidden at the bottom. Ingrid explains Gabriella’s history: a traumatic accident at age eight led to years of selective mutism; after roughly six months at The Manor, she eats well, paints, reads, walks under supervision, and has begun to whisper occasionally, mainly with a specialist carer named Mary, who records her progress.
Carter attempts polite questions, but Gabriella does not respond. As Ingrid points out Mary arriving for her shift, Carter looks outside and recognizes the woman immediately: it is Eden Fox. The sight confirms Eden is alive, contradicting the accepted narrative of her suicide and reframing the case.
