42. Harlow

Overview

Harlow and Kellan scour the family library and uncover ancestral maps suggesting the Mountain, Blood, and Family wells are connected, with possible runoff east toward the Drained Wood. Harlow links worsening madness and Drained evolution to well contamination, prompting Kellan to send a team. A painting near the Cove revives Harlow’s trauma. Gaven confronts Harlow about Henry’s immunity; Henry arrives, and Harlow forces an uneasy truce.

Summary

At dawn in the Carrenwell library, Harlow researches family well history to explain rising madness and the Drained’s evolution. Kellan arrives exhausted, mentions a failed rebel-bar raid where Henry was seen leaving, and confirms rebels tried to bomb the Blood Well. Harlow withholds details about the burned rebel note, prioritizing her plan against Rafe.

They theorize that contamination, not cumulative magic use, drives the madness. Harlow reveals the Mountain Well, and together they hypothesize a connected flow among Mountain, Blood, and Family wells. Seeking records, they consult Louisa Carrenwell’s hand-drawn city histories and locate maps marking wells and early water channels, with a no-build zone east of South Hold that could indicate runoff into the Drained Wood.

Kellan resolves to send a team to scout near the eastern no-build boundary for signs of contamination. Harlow recalls a painting titled Stellaria’s Deathless and leads Kellan to the stairwell outside the Cove, where the artwork triggers vivid memories of her father’s abuse. She recounts a Mountain Haven tale: Deathless became Drained through greed and well-water corruption, proposing that the same corruption now fuels both the Carrenwell madness and the Drained’s evolution.

Kellan remains cautious but agrees the runoff merits investigation and gently suggests Harlow might find peace with Henry. Harlow insists she cannot until she settles her scores. They part so Kellan can assemble a team.

Gaven intercepts Harlow, pressing when she learned she could kiss Henry without poisoning him. Realizing she knew before the marriage, he warns her trust is dangerous and admits a strange feeling about Henry. Henry appears mid-confrontation; silent hostility flares between the men. Harlow intervenes, demanding they set aside distrust and stop making it her problem.
