63. Henry

Henry reflects on his decade-long desire to avenge his sister Holly and on Harlow’s use of their safeword after discovering he hid a Polm blessing. Racked with guilt and love, he briefs Bryce, Carter, and Naima: he can now see color, believes Harlow killed her parents, and admits she fled after seeing his aura.

With new instructions to unmask Rochelli, Henry outlines the siblings’ magic and the tunnel, then they move to the festival square. Spotting Harlow poised as Stellaria, Henry restrains himself as Rafe approaches. Using Polm, bolstered by Bryce’s doctored whiskey, Henry seizes Rafe’s will and forces public admissions about manipulating dissent and the Mountain Haven attack. Carter and Bryce secure Rafe and remove him.

Harlow performs Stellaria’s rite to signal change. As drums peak, the rebel leader appears: Kellan Carrenwell reveals he is Rochelli. He addresses the crowd, denounces his parents’ control of history, announces the end of blood tithes, and shares that well water kills the Drained. He unveils protected Vardek-blessed youths to maintain the wall and formally apologizes to Mountain Haven; Henry pledges support.

Kellan then publicly acknowledges Harrick and Liza’s abuses, including Aidia’s murder by Rafe, and declares the parents dead, taking responsibility to calm the city. The crowd accepts his leadership through transition as other houses display support. Harlow confronts Kellan for setting her up to meet Henry; Kellan admits he orchestrated it to protect her, trusting Henry or ensuring the threat died.

In the aftermath, Henry savors the victory yet fears losing Harlow. She withdraws her hand and tells him nothing has changed. He asks her to come to North Hold at sundown; she hesitates but agrees to consider it, leaving him determined but uncertain.
