3. Harlow

Overview

Harlow meets her marked target at Heartless Haven but discovers he is immune to her kiss-delivered poison. The man, calling himself Asher, is unexpectedly considerate, challenging her assumptions about the client’s accusations. Shaken by his resistance and demeanor, Harlow abandons the kill and escapes, leaving the job unfinished.

Summary

Due to a power outage that limits her glamour’s use, Harlow enters Heartless Haven without changing her appearance back. She identifies her target by his embroidered navy coat and a white rose, then draws him in with calculated allure, adopting her practiced role to isolate him.

The man introduces himself as “Asher,” exuding confidence and unexpected courtesy, even arranging privacy and delaying to protect her reputation. In his rented room, Harlow prepares to administer her poison through a kiss, recalling the fear, vigilance, and constraints that have long shaped her life.

Asher escalates with unusual tenderness and asks consent repeatedly, contradicting what Harlow expects from an abuser. She kisses him, infusing her lips with potent toxin. Despite repeated, intensified contact—including drawing blood—he shows no symptoms, only deepening desire, revealing an apparent immunity to her poison.

Startled by both his resistance and his considerate behavior, Harlow questions her assumptions about the mark and the client’s story. Overwhelmed and sensing danger from the unknowns, she fabricates an excuse, refuses to continue, and flees the room, leaving the target alive and the contract unresolved.
