6. Harlow

Harlow staggers into the sunroom overcome by an oncoming attack. Gaven recognizes the signs, rushes her to her rooms, and procures ice and a drink while keeping staff at bay. Alone, Harlow endures waves of blinding pain and nausea, reflecting on her parents’ contempt, a dismissive mender, and the past abuse that tied her pain to Aidia’s protection.

After the episode ebbs, Harlow wakes aching and fogged; Aidia has slipped in, calm but worn. Aidia admits Rafe will keep her from the evening’s party but insists on helping now. They descend past the warded lock into the family well, Gaven standing guard outside, and Harlow plunges into the cold water to clear her head.

There, the sisters sift the danger: someone hired Harlow to kill Henry, who wore a ring that concealed his aura, meaning the plotter knew both Harlow’s poison-kiss magic and Henry’s identity. Aidia teases out Harlow’s reluctant attraction after the kiss that should have killed him, and they consider whether the shadowy Rochelli network could be involved.

Bolstered by Aidia, Harlow confronts her larger fight: maintaining charm and control at Mountain Haven while spying, and refusing to be used by their parents. She declares her plan for the sisters to leave Lunameade after her term, but Aidia—hollowed by Rafe’s control—soberly doubts they can, leaving Harlow’s resolve hardened but unproven.
