47. Henry

Overview

Henry resolves to remove Gaven and lures him to the holding cells, where a fierce fight ends with Henry mortally wounding him. Gaven proves impervious to Divine magic, confesses his loyalty to Harlow, and reveals Harrick killed other Vardek-blessed children and that the Carrenwell well has failed. Gaven dies, destabilizing Henry’s long-laid plans.

Summary

Leaving his parents, Henry learns from Carter that Gaven was probing the recovery room. Determined to eliminate Gaven without alarming Harlow, Henry orders the holding cells prepared and plans to stage the death as Stefan’s message. Carter warns this could backfire given Harlow’s attachment, but Henry proceeds.

Henry finds Harlow safe and teasing—first in lingerie, then in a white dress on hunt night—and secures her promise to remain indoors until after dinner. He then approaches Gaven on the patio, baiting him with a supposed gift of custom blades and guiding him toward the holding cells under the guise of secrecy.

Inside, Gaven senses the trap and attacks. After a grueling fight, Henry drives a blade between Gaven’s ribs. Attempting to heal him, Henry discovers his magic cannot take; Gaven reveals he is impervious to Divine blessings and only wields borrowed holy fire for Harlow’s protection. With blood loss mounting, Henry presses for information.

Gaven admits he was investigating the recovery room due to its unusual security and confesses his true loyalty lies with Harlow, not the Carrenwells, regretting past failures to protect her from family harm. He divulges Harrick has murdered every newly Vardek-blessed child to maintain control, a revelation that shocks Henry.

As he fades, Gaven urges Henry to tell Harlow the truth he hides, asks Henry to tell her he loves her, and withholds details about a crucial event six months prior. Pressed on why the Carrenwells sent Harlow quickly, Gaven says their well has stopped working. When asked how he knows, he rasps “Madness,” then dies. Henry realizes his decade of careful planning has unraveled with Gaven’s death and the explosive truths he carried.
