4. Harlow
Overview
Harlow prepares for her political betrothal, bargaining for freedom if she secures her family’s aims. Her parents assign her to win her fiancé’s loyalty and uncover Mountain Haven’s survival methods and possible rebel ties.
When the Havenwoods arrive, Harlow’s fiancé is revealed as last night’s target. After a blood-signed contract, her father publicly declares her deadly poison kiss, raising stakes as her magic shows troubling faults.
Summary
As Marie finishes Harlow’s elaborate coiffure, Harlow hides that her kiss-poison failed the previous night and that her sight of magic auras feels off. She frames the impending marriage as leverage to win a favor: the tunnel key her father controls, the only safe route beyond the Drained, so she can one day escape with Aidia.
Harlow’s mother arrives; their strained relationship resurfaces. The mother’s retrocognition and political calculus contrast with Harlow’s need for autonomy. When Harlow’s father joins, he outlines the plan: sign the marriage contract, keep the Havenwoods in Lunameade for two weeks, and use the time to learn their secrets—how they survived and whether they’re tied to Rochelli’s rebellion and the Divine of Endings. Harlow, afraid of being trapped, demands the tunnel key and freedom upon success; after tense words, her father grudgingly agrees.
Gaven confirms he will accompany Harlow to Mountain Haven, steadying her nerves as a headache and glassy eyes hint at her faltering magic. They proceed to meet the Havenwoods. Harlow perceives only faint, unblessed auras on the parents, deepening her disorientation.
Henry Havenwood arrives—and he is the man Harlow targeted the night before under the name Asher. He stays silent about their encounter, teasing her privately as the families review terms. All parties sign the marriage contract with blood per Lunameade’s magic laws.
With the pact sealed, the Havenwoods request disclosure of Harlow’s gift. As Harlow braces—knowing her poison failed the night before and fearing exposure—her father announces it: Harlow bears a deadly poison kiss, a revelation that will redefine trust and danger within the new alliance.
