31. Harlow

Harlow sneaks from the fort using Aidia’s glamour necklace and attends explicit story hour at the Raining Star Bar to blend in and gather tales. After the performance, she flirts strategically with Brennan, a drunk hunter leader blessed by Elvodeen, to assess him and extract information.

Prodding Brennan’s pride, Harlow learns of recent changes in the Drained: coordinated breaches, tactical retreats, and a lair containing human women kept alive and bitten without turning. Brennan claims the Drained are breeding more intelligent offspring—“Breeders”—and boasts they captured one, now held by the armory. Disturbed, Harlow cuts the encounter short.

Determined to verify the threat, Harlow drops her glamour and infiltrates the armory annex via an upper window. Inside, she discovers the Breeder moving freely on the ground floor, unsupervised while guards gamble outside. The creature’s eerie calm and focus signal heightened intelligence, intensifying Harlow’s fear and urgency to warn Henry.

Before she can retreat, Stefan Laurence climbs in with two thugs. On the narrow catwalk, Stefan taunts her—admitting his earlier attacks were to test Henry, then motivated by vengeance after she humiliated him. Harlow fights back, headbutting Stefan and stabbing him, but is grappled and nearly pitched over the railing as the Breeder watches with unsettling composure.

Seizing a slim opening, Harlow shifts her weight to break Stefan’s hold and wounds Joe, one of his men. In the scramble, Joe topples over the railing and drags Harlow with him. The chapter ends mid-crisis as both crash toward the floor below, the Breeder still at large.
