24. Harlow
Overview
Harlow and Henry wed in a darkness-themed ceremony echoing Asher and Stellaria. A potent blessing surges through them, and Henry unexpectedly vows protection and vengeance, then heals Harlow’s blood-mark. Their charged kiss cements public approval before the feast. The chapter ends as their ten-minute, secret-sharing communion begins beneath a scarlet veil.
Summary
In Mountain Haven’s candlelit hall, Harlow begins a wedding she designed to mirror the Divine lovers Asher and Stellaria, recalling darkness and abduction. She steels herself before a masked crowd that favors Henry, with only Gaven present for her. Evangeline leads the opening ritual, extinguishing and rekindling candles to dramatize divine favor, and Philip formally welcomes the union.
Harlow battles nerves and resentment while Henry quietly praises her appearance. Evangeline and Philip invoke blessings from multiple Divine, asking for longevity, protection, luck, pleasure, and fertility. A sudden flare of light and a tingling rush through Harlow and Henry, signaling the blessing’s force and unsettling Harlow with its palpable intensity.
During vows, Harlow delivers the generic promises they chose, blooding her ring finger as pledge. Henry surprises her by adding protection and vengeance to his vows, clearly reacting to her back scar and aligning himself with her pain. They seal vows with joined blood; Henry heals the cut with a kiss, which Harlow reads as manipulation even as she privately vows to outwill him if she cannot kill him.
At Philip’s cue, Henry kisses Harlow fiercely, drawing cheers. They proceed to the feast for the communion rite. Evangeline sets a small hourglass, announcing ten minutes for intimate sharing. Despite panic and the public setting, Harlow submits to sitting in Henry’s lap. As the servants drape a scarlet veil over them, the chapter closes with the communion—and the pressure to confess—just beginning.
