2. Harlow

Overview

On the eve of an arranged betrothal to Mountain Haven’s heir, Harlow resumes her covert work as the Poison Vixen. She retrieves a summons, meets Bea at Guardian’s Crossing, and accepts a risky rush job from an abused mother targeting Ron at the Heartless Haven Pub. Flashbacks reveal Harlow’s lethal origin and the calculated poisoning of her former husband, underscoring the stakes as she prepares for a possibly final kill amid reports of missing women.

Summary

Under a new moon, Harlow slips through Lunameade toward the Blood Well, avoiding guards by feigning devotion at the founding mural before continuing to her clandestine mailbox. Distracted by her parents’ surprise betrothal announcement to Mountain Haven’s heir, she uses a glamour necklace from Aidia to disguise herself and collect a summons directing her to Guardian’s Crossing.

As she travels, Harlow reflects on killing at age six when her kiss first manifested as poison, the enforced silence that protected her status, and Electra erasing witnesses’ memories. She frames her vigilante mission: transforming her cursed gift into protection for abused women, leaving misleading vial clues to obscure the breadth of her poisons.

At Bea’s crowded bar, Harlow learns the client demands a rush job, violating their vetting rules. Despite Bea’s concern and mention of multiple missing women in the pleasure district, Harlow insists on acting before her betrothal limits her freedom. She confides the political calculus of her family, recalling how she slowly poisoned her former husband, Marc Beckley, to dismantle his ambitions.

Bea confronts Harlow in private, worried and protective, but Harlow prioritizes helping one more woman. Bea shares that traders might return if Mountain Haven has rebuilt, while Harlow notes Kellan suspects her parents want her to spy on the Havenwoods.

Behind a curtain, Harlow meets the bruised client, a mother of three. The woman pays unusually well and, desperate to stop escalating violence, presses for immediate action, naming her husband Ron. She describes Ron’s appearance and location at the Heartless Haven Pub and his dangerous friends. Harlow agrees, instructs the woman to build an alibi, returns some coin, and departs to execute what may be the Poison Vixen’s final kill before the marriage contract is signed.
