62. Harlow
Overview
Harlow awakens beside Henry and realizes his aura hides a second blessing from Polm. Confronted, Henry admits manipulating Harlow’s emotions and accidentally killing Gaven. Reeling from the betrayal, Harlow rejects his pleas and escapes their room using the safeword, fracturing their fragile reconciliation.
Summary
Before dawn on Dark Star Festival, Harlow wakes entwined with Henry and briefly basks in their new intimacy. As she dresses, she notices burnt orange tendrils within Henry’s dark purple aura and realizes he is twice-blessed, hiding Polm’s emotion magic inside Elvodeen’s.
Panicked and hurt, Harlow confronts Henry about lying. She connects prior signs and accuses him of manipulating her and of Gaven’s death. Henry blocks the door but admits the paintings were his, he is the one twice-blessed, and he has used Polm’s gift on Harlow.
When Harlow presses about Gaven, Henry confesses he caused Gaven’s death, claiming it was accidental because he could not affect or heal him. The admission confirms Harlow’s worst fears: their bond has been shaped by manipulation. She feels foolish for trusting him and devastated that her most vulnerable confessions may have been coaxed.
Henry begs her to stay, torn between possessiveness and remorse. Overwhelmed, Harlow invokes their safeword—“Stars.” Bound by that promise, Henry steps aside. Harlow bolts into the hall and slams the door, choosing distance over a love she no longer trusts.
