Overview
Harlow and Henry meet storyteller Nicolina, who proposes that resentment-tainted tithes contaminate the well as its flow passes through the city and Family Well into the Drained Wood, advising an end to compulsory tithes. Nicolina discreetly arms Harlow with knowledge of Polm’s Opus and Deathless limits. After a tense street encounter with Stefan, Henry asks for Harlow’s trust; she refuses.
Summary
After a three-day wait, Harlow and Henry meet Nicolina at the nearly empty Raining Star Bar. Seeking insight before returning to Lunameade for Dark Star Festival, Harlow swears Nicolina to secrecy and explains the wells’ diminishing healing, the south-of-wall blood mist, and changes in the Drained.
At Nicolina’s request, Harlow sketches the Mountain Well’s flow through town, into the Family Well, and out toward the Drained Wood. Nicolina concludes that compulsory secondary blood tithes have infused the well with resentment, poisoning the Family and aggravating the Drained. She urges ending mandatory tithes so offerings are voluntary and potent again, warning some harms may only be mitigated.
When Henry steps away, Nicolina quietly points out Polm’s Opus—petals that grant temporary influence over a person and their magic—and where to find it. On Deathless, she explains they straddle life and death, heal fast, and are strong but not indestructible. She praises the Havenwoods’ tolerance for dissent, cautions Harlow to be the fire, not the tinder, and implies Henry’s goodness does not erase risks.
Leaving the bar, Harlow and Henry pass a laughing group that includes Stefan; they move on without confrontation due to their early departure for Lunameade. Back at Havenwood House, Henry asks if Harlow can trust him and invites her to share his bed for safety. Recognizing the manipulation and guarding her autonomy, Harlow refuses and returns to her own room.
