32. Henry

Henry enters the Raining Star and senses hostility, especially from the Laurence-aligned storytellers. Gaven reveals Harlow has a limited-use glamour necklace, explaining how she could evade recognition. At the bar, Nicolina Laurence pointedly notes Henry’s public intimacy with Harlow, and Brennan Marley is identified as the man who went upstairs with a woman matching Harlow’s disguise.

Confronting Brennan, Henry learns Brennan bragged about a captive Breeder to impress the woman, prompting her to bolt. Fearing Harlow has gone to investigate alone, Henry leads Bryce, Carter, and Gaven at a sprint to the holding cells, brushing past negligent guards and breaching the secured door.

Inside, Henry finds Stefan Laurence and Roland Hazrah leaning over the upper railing toward Harlow, who is already on the ground floor facing a loose Breeder. Their surprise sends Stefan and Roland tumbling to the first level. Harlow, bleeding and shaken, braces herself despite intense magically induced terror from two Polm-blessed men—Stefan and another, Joe.

Assessing the evolved Drained’s behavior, Henry notices the Breeder focuses on Gaven, confirming Gaven’s hidden strength. Henry orders Gaven to circle outside and enter from the ground door only when opened, while Bryce holds the upper level as a fail-safe. As the three men rush the exit below, Henry shouts for Harlow to let Gaven in and run.

Instead, Harlow plants herself in front of the door, gripping her dagger. Despite injuries and compounded fear magic, she refuses to flee, choosing to stand between the Breeder, the Polm-blessed men, and their only way out, as Henry and his allies move to contain the crisis.
