66. Harlow

Overview

Kellan publicly covers the Blood Well, pauses blessings, and reveals he has long protected Vardek-blessed children, planning safer rotations. He keeps Able chained, hoping withdrawal from the well will restore him. Henry admits using Polm’s compulsion twice to soothe Harlow, asks consent and love, and openly chooses her. Harlow accepts on her terms, fleeing playfully so Henry must catch her.

Summary

At dawn in Lunameade, festival remnants linger as Kellan oversees guards placing a ceremonial cover and the Seven Divine statues over the Blood Well. Citizens gather, laying flowers as the city marks a pause in blood tithes and a turning toward a new order.

Harlow questions Kellan about resuming blessings and unregistered children. Kellan reveals he secretly protected Vardek-blessed youths for years by mislabeling them Elvodeen-blessed, training them in secrecy on a clinic roof, and now plans a safer rotation across quadrants. He lists their numbers and expresses cautious optimism. He also discloses that Able is chained in the Cove, hoping time away from the well might restore him; if not, he promises Harlow a merciful end will be considered later.

Kellan defends having trusted Henry, citing Polm’s aura seen on Descent night and Henry’s choice to back the Rafe deception for the greater good. He urges Harlow to face Henry, then departs. Henry escorts Harlow from the crowd, outlining cooperation between the fort and Lunameade: sharing intelligence on Breeders and a forty-man supplement to fort forces to reopen safer movement and trade.

In a private alley, Harlow demands honesty. Henry asks for her trust and vows never to use Polm’s compulsion on her without consent. He confesses he did so twice—once to ease a migraine into sleep and once to calm her grief in the garden—acknowledging it was wrong and affirming consent matters. He asks her to stay close and be angry with him if needed, not to leave.

Henry then declares he “sees” Harlow—his vision of her true aura awakening when he recognized her rage and resilience in his study. He professes love and asks her to choose him freely, not by obligation. Moved, Harlow sets a single condition: he must catch her. She bolts into the celebrating crowd, finally ready to stop running by choosing to be caught.
