Summary
After recklessly watching hunt night, Harlow resolves to learn Mountain Haven’s rules and sneaks into Havenwood’s library. She forces entry to a restricted shelf and studies a tome on marriage rituals, discovering the ceremony’s three parts: vows, communion under a veil, and a witnessed consummation with specified acts.
Henry catches Harlow with the forbidden book and explains local customs: strength is paramount, challenges are real, and public proof of their bond is protection. He warns her not to flirt, wander, or run, framing it as safeguarding them both and asking for a tactical truce.
Pressed to share, Harlow admits she has never climaxed with a partner because her uncontrolled kiss is lethal; only her hands are reliably governed. Henry agrees to keep the secret, recognizing its significance. Their push-pull escalates as he describes the ceremony details and expectations that he must convincingly please her before witnesses.
To reclaim control, Harlow performs for him on the library table, showing exactly how she reaches climax, while Henry holds back, observing. He then informs her of an imminent dinner with Mountain Haven’s leading families where she must behave strategically.
Finally, Henry reveals a critical twist: a golden sigil in the consummation bed absorbs true released pleasure, making faking impossible, especially before Kennymyra-blessed witnesses. They trade barbs and leave on a fraught détente, Harlow unsettled by Henry’s certainty and the stakes of the coming rites and dinner.
