8. Harlow

Overview

At her engagement dinner, Harlow tests Henry with Slyven Seed and confirms he resists her poisons even without his ring. Rafe publicly needles Harlow, implying knowledge of her secret and their clandestine meeting. As tensions sharpen and key guests slip away, Henry senses danger and shields Harlow as an explosion shatters the ballroom.

Summary

Harlow arrives at the Carrenwell House dinner amid judging stares and trades barbed banter with her brother Kellan, who presses her about Henry and updates her on the Poison Vixen investigation. She deflects, preserves her secret, and notes Kellan’s pattern-finding and duty-first mindset.

Henry enters to collective scrutiny. Harlow greets him provocatively and, to test his claims, laces his wine with Slyven Seed from her fingertip. Henry drinks without effect and theatrically spills the glass, confirming his resistance and their mutual leverage over each other’s secrets.

Rafe cuts in for a dance and weaponizes his manipulation blessing to unsettle Harlow, groping for signs of scars and taunting that he knows Henry arrived early and that Harlow’s mouth is “poison.” Harlow realizes Rafe likely knows her true magic—possibly wrung from Aidia—and suspects he may be orchestrating conflict.

Henry intervenes, then draws Harlow into a dance, where they trade cautions and weigh whom to inform. Harlow wants to tell Kellan for security; Henry probes the Carrenwell sibling power dynamics while guests conspicuously go missing from their table.

As Harlow scans for Kellan, Henry goes alert, tackles her, and covers her just as a blast rocks the house. Windows shatter, the ballroom erupts into chaos, and Harlow loses consciousness.
