Overview
Isla and Oro seek Remlar, who reveals Isla is Nightshade and can unlock her power. Remlar forcibly unravels Isla’s magic, splitting it into annihilation and creation that tear through the forest. Oro threatens Remlar but cannot stop the surge. Overwhelmed, Isla blacks out, marking a dangerous awakening.
Summary
Oro brings Isla to Remlar, the ancient winged being who once predicted she would come willingly. Remlar declares Isla is “touched by night,” revealing he knew her true nature during the Centennial. Oro demands Remlar unravel her power; Isla, choosing agency, insists he proceed despite the risks.
Remlar warns Oro to keep his distance, then places a hand on Isla’s forehead and heart. Agonizing power rips through Isla, and her scream fills the forest. Her left hand releases darkness that cinders life to ash, while her right hand summons a rolling bloom of flowers—death and fertility erupting side by side.
When the surge subsides, the landscape is cleaved between desolation and riotous growth. Oro rushes to Isla, fiercely protective and threatening Remlar with death if she is harmed. Calling her “love,” Oro tries to steady her, but the unleashed magic overwhelms Isla, and she staggers, unable to hold on.
Darkness finally consumes Isla’s senses. The chapter closes with Isla collapsing, her powers awakened and terrifyingly unbound, shifting the stakes for her identity and control.
