Overview
Isla seizes Grim’s powers at the bridge, leaving him defenseless as Oro prepares a killing blow. Grim reveals that his life is tied to Isla’s—if he dies, she dies—forcing Oro to halt. The revelation exposes a dangerous bond and resets the stakes of the battle and Isla’s impossible choice.
Summary
Isla wrests Grim’s shadows from him, cutting off his magic as Oro’s assault slams Grim to the ground. Grim struggles to rise and reaches for power that will not come. When Grim calls Isla “heart,” Isla’s resolve falters, but she maintains her hold, knowing she is rendering him unable to defend himself.
Oro forges a crackling Starling blade and raises it for the fatal strike. The sight of Grim’s fear—new and raw—shakes Isla, yet she keeps draining him. At the last instant, Grim bellows that if he dies, Isla dies, revealing a life-bound connection that reframes the execution.
Oro freezes, inches from Grim’s neck, furious and horrified as he understands what Isla has not yet fully grasped. The revelation halts the kill, exposing that Isla’s fate is tied to Grim’s, and forcing all three into a stalemate where any decision could cost Isla her life and the war its outcome.
