Key Clicking Into A Lock
Overview
Isla commits to training with Oro, initially failing to control her unraveled power. Oro reveals a childhood tragedy that shaped his ruthless self-control, encouraging Isla to forgive herself. Embracing her emotions, Isla finally channels her strength, then sharpens it through rigorous drills. She secures aid for Starlings and learns unchecked emotion endangers control.
Summary
Isla awakens beside the sleeping Oro and resolves never to feel powerless again. She begins training on Wild Isle but cannot rouse the land or move a simple rock. Oro advises focus and leaves her to attempt it, which only heightens her frustration as days pass without progress and intrusive thoughts erode concentration.
When Isla despairs, Oro shares his past: as a child he accidentally gilded an attendant to death, prompting a lifetime of strict control over emotions, heart, and tongue. His story of guilt, friendship, and eventual self-forgiveness reassures Isla that mastery comes with time and compassion.
At dawn, Isla confronts her grief—her parents’ legacy, Terra’s harsh molding, Aurora’s betrayal, and memories of Grim—and begins forgiving her younger self. That release quiets the inner noise; she focuses on the rock and feels a key click into a lock. She moves the rock, albeit wildly, gouging a trench through Wild Isle.
From then, she and Oro train from sunrise to sunset: runs by the Whitecliffs, precision exercises with earth and stone, and quiet evenings together. Isla also requests guards at the Star Isle bridge to protect Starlings, which Oro grants, easing her guilt over not visiting them.
In a blindfold drill, Isla senses incoming projectiles too late until fear and anger surge, unconsciously levitating branch-blades and rocks aimed at Oro. She drops them, shaken. Oro praises her focus but warns that emotion undoes control and can dangerously drain her. Isla doubles down on discipline.
Over the next week, Isla’s control steadies; the voices and memories recede, and there are no sightings of Grim. She hopes never to face him again as her mastery, purpose, and bond with Oro quietly deepen.
