Before — Chapter 50

Before the present conflict, Isla and Grim prepare a heist: Grim will lure a dragon away while Isla navigates layered protections. After Isla repeatedly completes Grim’s illusion-built course, they pause in his training room, trading barbs that reveal mutual attraction beneath their combative rapport.

Isla persuades Grim to attend the Skyling Launch of Orbs festival. Disguised by Grim’s illusion, they move through the glittering crowd as Azul delivers a public address. Isla notes Azul’s democratic rule, which Grim dismisses, highlighting their differing views. Despite Isla’s momentary doubt about being seen together, Grim pointedly reclaims her hand.

Grim teleports them into a chosen hot-air balloon and they ascend. Isla’s fear of heights eases when Grim reminds her he can portal them to safety. They share Skyling sparkling wine, trade cutting confessions about being each other’s bane, and give in to mounting desire. Grim presses Isla to the basket’s edge, then, at her request, portals them to her room mid-passion.

Though both are eager, Grim unexpectedly stops, tucking Isla beside him and telling her to sleep. The restraint leaves their bond charged and unresolved, cementing a tension that complicates their plan to face the dragon and foreshadowing how intimacy and control will shape their choices.
