Line Between Life and Death
Overview
Isla reveals growing Nightshade power to the Vinderland, secures their allegiance, and learns most of their fighters are incapacitated by a spreading sickness. She gambles scarce Wildling healing flowers and Calder’s limited skill to attempt a cure. With potential new forces, she plans energy walls to contain the coming battle, though doubts linger.
Summary
Amid battle tensions, Isla destroys a Vinderland warrior’s weapon with a touch, revealing her Wildling-Nightshade nature. The warrior, Singrid, recognizes legends of those “on the line between life and death” and pledges that his people will fight with Isla. He reveals hundreds remain but most are incapacitated by a persistent sickness.
Seeing a chance to gain a ruthless legion, Isla promises to try to heal them. She recruits Calder—despite his reputation as a poor healer—along with Enya and Zed, and proposes using Wildling healing flowers brewed as tea. Oro is considered but dismissed for illness-based healing.
They travel via starstick to the Wildling newland, where Wren shows the rare violet-black flowers used for elixirs. Isla weighs using scarce resources now to secure fighters later and decides to test a small batch first to gauge results.
Lynx, Isla’s massive bonded leopard, appears, startling Enya, Calder, and Zed. Isla contemplates bringing Lynx to battle for an advantage. With flowers gathered, Isla and Calder return to the Vinderland to attempt the cure and, if successful, unlock hundreds of trained warriors.
Looking ahead, Isla plans to train with Cinder on Star Isle to raise energy walls that will confine invading forces, complementing broader mainland defenses. Despite this progress, Isla fears their preparations may still be insufficient against Grim’s looming invasion.
