Overview
Isla remains with the Wildlings, sending Ciel and Avel back while Wren teaches her and proposes a traditional bonding ceremony. Alone in a perilous swamp, Isla survives a horned bear and is chosen by a massive black leopard. Completing the rite, she returns to learn the leopard is Lynx—her mother’s former bonded—securing her standing and heritage.
Summary
After volunteers depart, Isla stays in the Wildling newland to connect with her people, sending Ciel and Avel back to aid Azul’s rebel search. Though Oro wanted to remain, Isla insists on managing alone. Wren trains Isla in Wildling wielding and speaks of Isla’s mother’s close ties to the villages, stirring Isla’s longing for connection.
Wren reveals the custom of taking a bonded—an animal companion that reflects a ruler’s strength—and proposes a ceremony that very night. Determined to earn her people’s trust, Isla agrees. Led to an ancient swamp, Isla is given a bow and a single arrow and told rulers must wound the creature that chooses them.
Alone, Isla navigates a haunting forest, glimpsing uncanny wildlife. A towering, horned bear attacks, shattering her only arrow as she flees into the treetops. Injured and panicked, Isla focuses her Wildling power to snap a key branch, sending the bear crashing to the forest floor and buying her survival.
As blood draws predators, a colossal black leopard appears. Instead of attacking, the leopard bows, effectively choosing Isla. Understanding the rite must be completed, Isla stabs the leopard’s leg with the broken arrow half; the creature tolerates it and carries her at blinding speed back to the village.
Before gathered Wildlings, Wren, overcome, identifies the leopard as Lynx—once bonded to Isla’s mother. The revelation binds Isla to her people and lineage, proving her worth as ruler and deepening her connection to Wildling heritage.
