With five days left, Isla returns from the Wildling newland to complete logistics for moving warriors to Lightlark. Alongside Enya, she inventories dwindling healing elixirs, noting Soren’s reluctant decision to let Calder shadow his work restoring the Vinderland. Exhausted, Isla portals them back to Lightlark.

Resting briefly, Isla asks Enya about loved ones. Enya admits past loves but asserts that Oro’s duty eclipses personal happiness. She warns that Oro’s love for Isla makes him weak and could doom Lightlark. The candid admonition unsettles Isla, who both resents and privately fears Enya may be right.

After nearly finishing the civilian evacuations, Isla senses she is being followed on the Star Isle bridge. Anticipating an ambush, she allows herself to be taken into a cliffside cave by red-masked assailants. She traps them with Wildling stone-teeth before one unmasks as Maren, a Starling rebel leader Isla once trusted.

Maren pleads to explain and outlines “nexus,” ancient Nightshade-wrought curses commissioned by early Lightlark kings to keep people weak: limiting most to a single ability and tying subjects’ lives to rulers. The rebels claim Isla is immune to curses, born with two powers, and has already freed Wildling and Starling from dying with her. They kept this secret because fully breaking nexus would require the king’s death.

The rebels ask Isla to help kill Oro to liberate all realms from the ruler-life bond. Isla refuses immediately, prioritizing Oro’s life despite the rebels’ appeal to save thousands. She carves stairs and departs, debating whether to tell Oro or probe nexus but defers with the battle imminent. That night, a sudden thud punctuates the silence, hinting at imminent threat.
