Before — Chapter 42

Grim refuses Isla’s request to visit the cave, citing a ball as a necessary distraction. Bored and jealous, Isla sneaks into the Nightshade castle, dressed to blend in, and finds a world of unabashed debauchery. Her entrance draws hungry stares—and, almost instantly, Grim’s furious attention from his throne.

To provoke Grim and test herself, Isla dances with a scarred Nightshade man who boldly flatters her. After downing a drink he offers, Isla feels euphoric and light. She leads him to a dark corridor, determined to discover if desire exists apart from Grim, but the kiss leaves her numb and detached.

As the man grows more aggressive, a sword suddenly pierces his chest, stopping an inch from Isla. Grim appears, promises the man will suffer without immediate death, and reveals the drink was a paralytic meant to leave Isla helpless. Noting her flushed skin, Grim gives her an antidote that quickly reverses the tightening in her body.

With the danger passed, Grim taunts Isla about seeking pleasure, while Isla insists she would rather die than let him touch her. Grim leans in, sparks their mutual attraction, and vows he will not touch her again until she begs him to—confident she eventually will. Overwhelmed, Isla shuts her eyes; when she opens them, both Grim and the attacker are gone, leaving the threat—and desire—sharpened.
