Chapter 47 – Liam
Overview
Liam wakes after resurrecting Dianna and realizes the act has drained or altered his power, confirming that saving her came with a cost. He confides in Logan, who warns that resurrection is forbidden and potentially universe-altering, while Liam begins planning to seek answers from the council about Rashearim and the surviving Kings of Yejedin.
The chapter clarifies that Liam's attachment to Dianna has become powerful enough to override duty, even at the expense of the Book of Azrael. Dianna's awakening with knowledge of Liam as a World Ender ties her blooddream directly to their present crisis and forces Liam's buried past into the open.
Summary
Liam wakes in an unfamiliar mortal bedroom, disoriented by sunlight and the ordinary surroundings. Dianna sleeps beside him, and Liam checks her heartbeat, nearly overcome with relief that the resurrection worked. Seeing that Dianna also cleaned and moved them, Liam contrasts her self-condemning image as a monster with her habit of protecting others.
Liam remembers the crypt after Tobias took the Book of Azrael: Dianna died after tearing out her own heart, Tobias escaped, and the undead army collapsed. Refusing to lose Dianna, Liam placed her heart back in her chest, cut his palm, and poured his power into her body until her organs, bones, muscles, and skin healed. Although Dianna lives, Liam fears resurrection has consequences.
Liam leaves the room and tries to summon Logan, but Liam's power hits an unfamiliar barrier. Remembering his father's warning that resurrection has a cost, Liam calls Logan by phone instead. When Logan arrives, Liam tells Logan about El Donuma, the battle, Dianna's death and resurrection, and the threat now facing them.
Logan warns that resurrection is forbidden because it can damage the resurrected, the resurrector, or even the universe. Logan presses Liam about whether Liam loves Dianna, and Liam avoids answering directly, though Liam's thoughts reveal deep attachment and guilt. They discuss Gabby, Neverra, Drake, the vampires, and the danger that the Four Kings of Yejedin may still be alive and may have been operating in secret for a long time.
Liam decides he must go to the council to search for any scrolls or texts Victoria brought from Rashearim that might explain their situation. Because Imogen, Cameron, and Xavier will confront Liam, Logan agrees to accompany him, gather mortal clothing, and distract Imogen while Liam brings Dianna. Alone, Liam blames himself for losing the book and admits to himself that he resurrected Dianna because he could not bear existing without her.
A scream interrupts Liam's thoughts, and Liam rushes upstairs. Dianna is awake, clutching her chest and staring at Liam in shock. After her blooddream of Liam's past, Dianna tells him, You really are a World Ender.
