Chapter 45 – Dianna

Overview

Liam revives Dianna by replacing her heart and feeding her his blood after her attempt to stop Tobias by sacrificing herself. Their reunion becomes a confrontation: Dianna sees her death as necessary, while Liam sees it as a failure to trust him and proof that she undervalues her own life.

The victory Dianna hoped to secure fails because Tobias escapes with Azrael's relic, shifting the crisis toward Kaden and raising the stakes. Liam's collapse at the end shows that saving Dianna has badly weakened him, leaving them vulnerable just as they need to act.

Summary

Dianna wakes in darkness feeling strangely whole, then is overwhelmed by searing pain in her chest. A warm liquid fills her throat, reviving her senses and body, and Dianna realizes she is not dead. When Dianna opens her eyes beneath the stars, she finds Liam cradling her and forcing his blood into her mouth.

Liam reveals that he physically put Dianna's heart back into her chest after Tobias tore it out. Dianna tries to stop feeding from Liam, but Liam insists she drink until she heals. Once Dianna is stable, she notices Liam is filthy, wounded, missing his usual silver sheen, and healing more slowly than normal.

Dianna examines the fresh scar where her heart had been removed and understands that Liam saved her again. The two are in a grassy field near a massive hole in the ground, suggesting Liam escaped the collapsing temple with Dianna's body. When Dianna asks what happened, Liam angrily says Tobias secured the last existing relic of Azrael because Dianna chose to sacrifice herself.

Dianna defends her choice, arguing that Liam was about to risk the book for her and that she gave him the chance to save everyone else. Liam counters that Dianna did not trust him and that she had no right to decide he could not save both her and the book. His anger reveals fear and pain rather than cruelty, especially when he accuses Dianna of treating her own life as worthless.

Liam says they must leave before Tobias reaches Kaden. Dianna offers to fly them away under cover of darkness, but Liam refuses because Dianna was just dead. Before they can decide their next move, Dianna notices Liam swaying; Liam insists he is fine, then passes out, forcing Dianna to catch him.
