Chapter 48 – Dianna

Overview

Dianna confronts Liam after witnessing the truth of Rashearim’s destruction and learns that his World Ender title is rooted in grief, trauma, and the death of his father. Their fragile trust steadies when Liam admits the limits of what he knows, including the unknown cost of Dianna’s resurrection.

The chapter then shifts into a covert infiltration of the council, where Dianna impersonates Imogen while Logan creates a distraction. The mission immediately becomes dangerous when Cameron’s heightened senses nearly expose Dianna, showing that Liam’s own allies may become obstacles before they ever reach the information they need.

Summary

Dianna wakes afraid of Liam after seeing his memories of Rashearim’s destruction. She confronts Liam with what she saw: Unir’s death, Liam’s slaughter of Ig’Morruthens, and the truth behind the title World Ender. Liam confirms the memories are true and admits he would once have killed Dianna if he had believed it necessary, though he insists it is not necessary now.

Dianna asks to see the blade from the memory, and Liam summons Oblivion. Liam explains that he forged the weapon from grief after his mother’s death and that his father’s death shattered him, driving him into isolation and making him the cold man Dianna first met. Dianna understands that the title World Ender is not pride but punishment, a constant reminder that Unir was World Bringer while Liam is remembered for ending his home.

Dianna also realizes Liam reacted so strongly to her death because Unir once died for him. Liam admits he is tired of people sacrificing themselves for him and does not believe he is worth it. When Dianna asks about the cost of their resurrection, Liam says he does not know. Logan then appears with clothing and reveals the next plan: sneaking into the council to search for information.

At the council halls, Liam explains that he cannot openly request information about Azrael’s book because someone on the council may have known about it and hidden it. Logan goes to distract Imogen and other council members while Dianna shifts into Imogen’s appearance. Dianna and Liam move through the halls toward the council chambers, trying to avoid attention while Dianna struggles with the language and the unfamiliar celestial world around her.

Liam hides Dianna when he spots Xavier, a member of The Hand, because Cameron is usually nearby. Cameron soon tackles Liam in greeting and jokingly exposes his sharp sense of smell. Cameron and Xavier tease Liam and the disguised Dianna about Imogen, unsettling Dianna with suggestions of Liam’s former closeness to her. Dianna plays the role with a flirtatious answer, but Cameron then notices that “Imogen” smells different. Liam covers by claiming he gave her perfume, and Cameron accepts the explanation, though Dianna remains terrified that Cameron and Xavier may see through her illusion.
